A young man from Monticello faces felony assault charges associated with a deputy-involved shooting incident in Monticello in late November.
18-year-old Dwayne Evan Trunnell was charged this week in Wright County Court with first and second degree assault related to the November 25th incident on Golf Course Road in Monticello.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office initially reported that just before 9 PM that evening, deputies responded to the 900 block of Golf Course Road in the City of Monticello.
A 9-1-1 caller had reported that a male with what was described as a large knife was in the street yelling.
When deputies arrived, they encountered an adult male, now identified as Trunnell, with a large knife walking on Golf Course Road. He reportedly ignored commands to stop and drop the knife. Officials say Trunnell instead began to advance on the deputies, and despite a Taser being used, he did not stop. One of the responding deputies fired multiple rounds from a handgun striking Trunnell, who was then taken into custody, and first aid was administered.
Trunnell was transported to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale for treatment.
No residents of the area were injured, and the deputies involved in the incident were not physically injured.
Trunnell is still in custody, and is scheduled to make his next court appearance Monday in Wright County Court. The Minnesota BCA is continuing its investigation.
