On the heels of the recent Hockey Day Minnesota, the 2nd Annual Hockey Day MAWSECO adaptive floor hockey tournament was celebrated January 30th at the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School.
Vinnie Pokornowski, an adapted phy-ed teacher with Meeker and Wright Special Education Co-op, or MAWSECO says the 2026 event built on last year’s groundbreaking program…
“Yeah it was great…lotsa smiles, lotsa fun. We had students coming out from Delano, Dassel-Cokato, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Annandale and Rockford to play some floor hockey.”
Pokornowski says the event went smoothly thanks in large part to some volunteer high school hockey players from around the area including Delano…
“I’ve actually had a couple of parents reach out already today, parents of our athletes, saying how much they appreciated that…and that was cool. Those high school hockey kids from Delano did a great job.”
Participants in the floor hockey event enjoyed the support of many spectators, including students from the host school, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted…
“There were students coming down from lunch at Howard Lake and coming down and cheering. They’ve got a little field house, and then they were lining the track and cheering for the kids. It was pretty cool.”

A shootout was held at the end of the event where all players had a chance to score a goal. Other highlights of the day included special appearances by the Annandale Cardinals mascot, and Goldy Gopher from the University of Minnesota.
