With bitterly cold winter temperatures across the area recently, the Minnesota Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents of the need to be extra careful using alternative heating sources.
State Fire Marshal Chief Deputy Amanda Swenson says all heating systems in the house need to be professionally checked…
“While I think many people will have their systems checked by a professional once a year, Don’t forget about those fireplaces and those systems as well. So of course we want to make sure inspected, cleaned and tip top shape.”
She says care must always be taken when using space heaters…
“When you’re plugging in a space heater directly to the wall, we don’t want to be using an extension cord. Make sure it’s clear 3 feet around a space heater, so nothing that can catch fire around that three feat around that.”
The State Fire Marshal division reported more than 300 structure fires related to heating in 2022.
