Kites On Ice in Buffalo and Maple Lake Ice Fishing Derby Today (Saturday)

Two of the biggest wintertime attractions in Wright County happen today (Satruday) on the ice on Buffalo Lake and Maple Lake.

The annual Kites On Ice Festival will be held on Buffalo Lake February 8th, and Sue Olmscheid with the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce says visitors are in store for quite a visual treat…

Kite hobbyists from around the Midwest will have these huge kites in all shapes,sizes, and colors will be there, and throughout the day more and more will be added.”

Other activities will include a pond hockey tournament, dog sledding, a cornhole tournament, food trucks, a beer garden, hot chocolate and treats. Plus, the downtown area merchants and restaurants will be open to welcome visitors.

The events run from 11 AM to 3 PM. There is no admission charge. The only cost will be for food and beverages.

Meanwhile on Maple Lake, the 50th Annual Fishing Derby will be taking place, with thousands of participants expected.

The grand prize is for the 50th largest northern pike by weight. Then we have about 46 other major prizes are given in the northern pike division. We also have prizes for the largest walleye, bass and panfish.”

A raffle drawing will be held for another Ice Castle Fish House. The derby runs today (Saturday) from 12 noon to 3 PM, followed by the ice auger drilling contest, the awards ceremony and the on-ice after party. Shuttle buses will be run from various locations in town right to the lake.
