Safety First on This Fishing Opener Weekend

It’s the opening of the big game fishing opener this weekend in Minnesota.

Lisa Dugan with the DNR says despite the recent warm weather, water temperatures are still dangerously cold this time of the year…

An unexpected fall into cold water this time of year can cause a cold water shock response. What that means is if you fall into the water unexpectedly, your body automatically gasps, so by wearing a life jacket, you are actually ensuring that your head stays above the water, and it’s the one piece of safety equipment that can save your life.”

Dugan says a common question is about the best life jacket to buy…

The best life jacket is the one you actually wear. So whether it’s an inflatable life jacket or a foam life jacket, pick the one that works best for you and the one you will wear on the water.”

Officials say a half-million anglers will fish Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes throughout this year’s opening weekend.

The 77th Annual Governor’s Fishing Opener is happening this weekend in the Crosslake area. It’s the first time the governor’s opener has been held at Crosslake.
