No Injuries or Hazmat Leaks Following Train Derailment Near Watkins Thursday Evening

Cleanup continues at the site of a train derailment that happened early Thursday evening just west of the Meeker County community of Watkins.

The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office reports that around 7:20 PM Thursday, a Canadian Pacific Kansas City freight train ran off the tracks in the 66000 block near Meeker/Stearns Street.

The train was reportedly hauling hazardous materials, though officials say none of the cars were punctured, and no leaks were detected. No injuries were reported, and authorities say public safety was not threatened.

Crews from the rail line will continue to clear the scene today along with other emergency teams.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
