The 76th annual Cokato Corn Carnival continues today (Tuesday). The summer festival is one of the oldest in the Wright County area, and one of the only local celebrations that happen early in the week rather than on the weekend. Officials say the tradition goes back to the very beginning of the celebration, and was designed to be a way to promote Cokato and its businesses while they were open for the weekdays.
The feature of the free corn-on-the-cob was one of the innovations promoted by Charles Mitchell, the President of Green Giant, and the first chairperson of the Corn Carnival.
Today’s (Tuesday’s) featured events include exhibits at the Cokato Museum and Akerlund Photo Studio, fun on the midway with a children’s prize giveaway, the annual book sale at the Cokato Public Library, the KRWC Road Show near the main stage, bingo in the park, free corn-on-the-cob at Peterson Park from 4 to 8 PM, and tonight (Tuesday) at 8 PM, the Miss Cokato Coronation on the main stage.
Most events of the Corn Carnival are held in Cokato’s Peterson Park.
