Malorie Thorson of Waverly Crowned 72nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way

A lifetime dream came true Wednesday night for a young woman from Wright County.

20-year-old Malorie Thorson of Waverly was crowned the 72nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way Wednesday evening at the State Fair Bandshell as the traditional kickoff the the Minnesota State Fair.

Princess Kay is the title awarded to the winner of the statewide Minnesota Dairy Princess Program organized by Midwest Dairy Association.

Malorie’s first duty will be to have her likeness carved in a 90-pound block of butter in the walk-in “butter booth” at the fair. Throughout the rest of the State Fair, she and the other 9 finalists will be making numerous media and public appearances.

Malorie is a graduate of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School, and a student at South Dakota State University, where she is majoring in Dairy Production, with minors in Leadership and Agribusiness. She plans to return from college to help lead the 6th generation to operate the Diers Corporation Farm in Waverly.

Malorie is the daughter of Andy and Colette Thorson. Collette is a previous Princess Kay finalist.

Malorie is the 2nd-ever Princess Kay from Wright County. Kyla Mauk of Howard Lake was crowned Princess Kay 10 years ago in 2015.
