The new Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Malorie Thorson of Waverly sat for a butter sculpture of her likeness Thursday as one of her first duties at the 2025 Minnesota State Fair.

Malorie sat in the 40-degree “butter booth” in the dairy building for her traditional sculpting session. Malorie said she was happy to sit for the honor of her sculpture session that created her likeness out of a 90-pound block of butter by sculptor Gerry Kulzer…

Yes, I’m enjoying the 40-degree weather compared to what it is outside, although it’s not super hot. And, again, I was going to the State Fair since I was 3, and my mom was a Princess Kay finalist back in 1996.”

Though any of the 10 Princess Kay finalists would be a great choice for Princess Kay, Malorie says she is honored to be this year’s representative for the industry that she lives for…

I absolutely fell in love with the dairy industry at the very young age of three. There’s so many pictures of me in the parlor helping my mom milk cows because I absolutely being able to contribute to the greater good and feeding the world. So, it’s been an amazing journey to represent the dairy community, and I’m just so excited to be able to do that for the rest of the year.”

Princess Kay candidates are judged on their general knowledge of the dairy industry, communication skills and enthusiasm for dairy.

Throughout the coming year, Malorie will make public appearances as Princess Kay to help connect consumers to Minnesota’s dairy farm families. She will work to bring dairy to life through conversations, classroom visits and various speaking engagements about the nutritional benefits of dairy and dairy farmers’ continual commitment to environmental sustainability.

Midwest Dairy sponsors the Princess Kay program which is funded by dairy farmers through their promotion checkoff.
