Major Supplier for MN Foodshelves: Impact of Federal Shutdown Could Reach New Level if SNAP Benefits are Lost

Second Harvest Heartland is sounding the alarms about how the government shutdown is impacting Minnesotans’ food security.

CEO Sarah Moberg says the federal shutdown and possible loss of SNAP benefits could hurt more than 440,000 Minnesotans…

They are moving us from a hunger crisis into a hunger catastrophe. The emergency food system, which includes second Harvest Heartland, our food bank partners, local food shelves all over around the state, that could be the only resource available to those families.”

There are reports from local foodshelves, and others throughout the state that food assistance is already at a high level, and a loss of SNAP benefits could mean even higher pressure at food shelf locations.

The federal government shutdown is now in its third week, with no indication that a break in the stalemate is close.
