Holmstrom Savors Victory, Plans for Legislative Session Ahead

(District 29 State Senator-elect Michael Holmstrom, Jr.)

Newly elected State Senator Michael Holmstrom Jr. says after taking some time to savor a win in this week’s special election in Senate District 29, he’s now looking ahead to the work at hand.

Holmstrom, a Republican from Buffalo, was the winner on Tuesday in the race for the seat left vacant after the unexpected death this past summer of longtime State Senator Bruce Anderson of Buffalo. The first-time candidate for state office received more than 62 percent of the votes cast, and defeated DFL’er Louis McNutt, also of Buffalo, who received around 37 percent.

Holmstrom told KRWC Radio News that despite a strong base of GOP voters in Wright County and the surrounding portions of District 29, his supporters waged a determined campaign first to get his party’s endorsement, then to win in the special election…

We didn’t take anything for granted on our team. The Democrats were working hard in this district, we worked hard as well. Between all of our volunteers and organizations helping us, we had about 95 hundred doors, and over 55 hundred calls made. We pounded it hard, and the results show that…62 and a half percent, something like that, was an exceptional showing. We have not had a senate candidate on their first go around in an election to get that percentage as far back as we could find records. This was a very, very good turnout.”

Holmstrom says his victory was a clear message from the voters…

We see it as a mandate to do the things we talked about on the campaign trail. We were very clear and blunt about what we believed this district stood for and what the values of the people of Senate District 29 are, and we take that as a mandate to move forward and defend those values and export them down to St. Paul.”

KRWC Radio News will have more of an interview with State Senator-elect Holmstrom in the coming days.

The 2026 Minnesota Legislative Session will begin on February 17th.
