2026 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Observed

Wright County joins the rest of the country today (Monday) marking the January birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was the most iconic individual from the 1960s civil rights struggles in the U-S…

…I have a dream…my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!”

The most recognized moment of Dr. King’s August 28th, 1963 speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington. The speech was instrumental in motivating and mobilizing supporters of desegregation and in large part, helped in the eventual passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Today (Monday) is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday established in 1986 to honor the January 15th birth date of the slain civil rights leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and posthumous honoree of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal.

Because of the national holiday, federal, state, county and city governmental offices are closed today. Post offices are closed and there is no mail service. Most schools are closed, as are the majority of banks throughout the area.

Most retailers and other businesses however, are open normal hours today.
