Pet Safety Reminders in Frigid Temperatures

The winter months offer plenty of challenges for Minnesota pet owners, and particularly during bitterly cold temperatures.

Animal Humane Society Public Relations Strategist Brittany Baumann says there’s some commonly used items in the winter that can be harmful to pets…

Road salt. We want to make sure that is getting out of their paws and their coat as well as that snow and ice. That’s something that we don’t want to get stuck into our pets paws. It can be of an irritant to their paws if that salt gets caught in there. We do want you to watch out for antifreeze. It can’t be very sweet tasting to pets, and so, you know, if they get into that it it can actually be deadly for them. But it’s definitely something we want you to be on the lookout for.”

Baumann says you can try indoor dog parks or even some pet stores to get your dog exercise if the weather won’t let you take them outside.
