The Wright County Farm Bureau held its annual food awareness event at Buffalo Cub Foods on Friday, March 6th, which raised some 12-thousand dollars to support local food shelves.
One of the yearly events is a shopping spree challenge where lawmakers are divided into two teams, and are given 90 seconds to grab as much food as possible for food shelf donations.
State Senator Michael Holmstrom of Buffalo participated in the event, and said that the participants are given some suggestions from food shelf helpers…
“Well the food shelves walk with us and tell us what they need, so we try to target those things, then it’s just lifting as much as you can, and sweeping as much as you can into the cart.”

Senator Holmstrom said it was a fun event that provides some real help for the food shelves…
“We got about 25 hundred pounds of the food for the food shelves and we raised around 12 thousand dollars for the event, and we were happy to be here to do it.”
State Representative Joe McDonald of Delano was participating in his 16th shopping challenge, and revealed a little of the strategy used…
“We go to aisle 7 and 8, they have the canned vegetables and tuna and baked beans and coffee, ketchup and very heavy items and things that the food shelf really wants. So it’s 90 seconds, it goes fast, and we’re just piling everything into that cart so we can get the most weight…and we did our best for Wright County.”

Representative McDonald highlighted the food shelves that will be recipients from this year’s event…
“Three food shelves, Hanover, Annandale and the Wright County Community Action.”
Wright County Commissioners Nadine Schoen, Darek Vetsch, Kirby Moynagh and Tina Diedrick also participated in the annual event and pulled $2,975 worth of food products for the food shelves, winning bragging rights for this year.
