Melting Snow Creates Icy Conditions on Minnesota Roads

Part of the aftermath of the weekend snowstorm is a continuing freeze-thaw situation on roads throughout the southern half of the state and here in Wright County.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Jacob Beitlich says residual snow left on roads after the initial wave of plowing Sunday had a high moisture content that became ice and even black ice as temperatures plummeted in the overnight hours into Monday.

Beitlich says in some places, those freeze-thaw conditions could continue until warmer air arrives on Wednesday…

“The concern is that those wet surfaces are going to become ice-covered and we’re still going to have slick spots.”

High temps Monday were only in the low teens, and highs today (Tuesday) are expected to be in the 20s with the possibility of additional flurries.
