Safety officials in Minnesota are reminding residents of Severe Weather Awareness Week being observed all this week.

Today in part 3 of our 5-part series, we focus on the dangers of floods and flash flooding.

Flash Flood watches and warnings are very similar to other severe weather advisories for spring and summer weather. A Flash Flood Watch is issued when conditions are expected to develop that could cause a flash flood, while a Flash Flood Warning is issued when flash flooding becomes likely, especially for low-lying areas.

While only a few portions of the KRWC listening area are generally prone to consistent spring flooding, many areas in the region have seen flash floods from time to time due to torrential rains.

Motorists are reminded that no one should drive on a flooded roadway, and it is against the law to drive around road closed barriers. The rule of thumb to remember when a road is flooded is, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Thursday’s focus during Severe Weather Awareness Week is tornadoes. Residents are reminded that Wright County will participate in the annual statewide Tornado Drills, which are scheduled for 1:45 and 6:45 PM. Civil defense sirens will be activated for the drills here in Wright County.
