It’s April 15th, and for most taxpayers, today (Wednesday) is the tax deadline day.
Here in Minnesota, both federal and state taxes must be filed by midnight tonight. For paper returns, the envelope must be postmarked by April 15th.
If you cannot file by today (Wednesday), you can request an automatic 6-month extension by filing Form 4868. Taxpayers are reminded however, that an extension to file your return is not an extension to pay. Any taxes owed must be paid by today to avoid penalty and interest. Individuals who cannot afford to pay are still recommended to file on time and consider a payment plan with the IRS.
