Officials with the Minnesota DNR say if you’re planning to take part in this weekend’s fishing opener, make safety a priority while enjoying time on the water…
“People put a lot of planning into their day before they head out into the water. And it’s really important to make sure that you have safety as a part of that plan. And really, the biggest things are going to be the easiest things. So always wear your life jacket. You already have it with you. And then either bring a buddy or let somebody know where you’re going and when you’re going to be back, and attach that engine cutoff switch.”
That’s Lisa Dugan with the DNR. She shares some life jacket recommendations for anglers…
“The best life jacket is the one you actually wear, so make sure it’s something comfortable that you want to wear. And a foam life jacket is best for the early seasons since the waters are still dangerously cold.”
Around 500,000 anglers are expected to take part in this weekend’s fishing opener across the state.
