Experts Say Many Factors Can be Involved in Suicide

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention month. Today, more on potential factors that can lead to someone dying by suicide.

Suicide prevention experts are stressing that there usually isn’t one event or issue that explains why someone reaches a crisis point…

We talk a lot in suicide prevention about social determinants of health. Things like, you know, what kind of housing do you have? Do you have a job? How are your finances? Do you have a substance abuse issue? All of those are contributing factors to suicide, as is mental illness.”

Erich Mische is the CEO of SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education).

He says a person’s circumstances can involve a combination of factors. Mische says suicide can also be impulsive, which is one reason prevention efforts focus on recognizing risk and connecting people with help before a crisis escalates.
