Minnesota DNR Youth Deer Hunt This Weekend

The Minnesota DNR reminds residents of the annual youth deer hunting weekend this Thursday through Saturday, October 15th through the 18th – coinciding with MEA weekend in Minnesota.

DNR Deer Coordinator Paul Burr says the special season is designed to introduce new hunters to the sport in a less crowded setting…

“That’s certainly what we see it as is a great tool to recruit new hunters, especially for family members or maybe older adults that also hunt. It’s a great time you can bring out a youth hunter, mentor that hunter, get them into the sport, help them out, learn it.”

The four-day youth hunt is aimed at hunters ages 10 to 17 and is in effect statewide. The youth hunt began in 2004 in northwest Minnesota and the DNR expanded it statewide in 2019. Approximately 20,000 kids participate in the hunt each year and harvest an average of 6,700 deer each youth season.
