America Remembers 9-11 on 24th Anniversary of Terror Attacks

Today is Patriot Day, the annual day of national remembrance and reflection on the 24th anniversary of the terror attacks on the U-S on 9-11 in 2001.

September 11th, 2001, terrorists commandeered four passenger jets and flew three of them into civilian and governmental targets in the United States.

Two planes struck the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and another was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D-C.

A fourth plane that may have been headed for one of a number of important governmental buildings in Washington never reached its intended destination as passengers appeared to have staged a defensive attack of their own against the hijackers, and the plane went down in a farm field in Pennsylvania. All 45 people aboard died, including one of the leaders of the counter-attack on the hijackers, Minnesotan Thomas E. Burnett, Jr.

2753 people died in the attacks on the World Trade Center, including more than 370 firefighters and police officers. Some 10 thousand people were injured, many severely.

Today, Wright County residents join the rest of the state and nation in marking the day either at official ceremonies, prayer gatherings, or simply in their own thoughts and prayers. Many groups and civic organizations have adopted September 11th as a day to give back to the community and community residents in a number of different ways and volunteer opportunities.
