The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has started accepting applications for its food to school program. Schools and early-care providers can apply for grants to bring locally produced fresh foods in for their students.
Program Coordinator Kate Seybold says it’s a benefit not only for food programs, but for the state’s farmers as well…
“We hear from farmers that schools and early-care providers are such a great market for them to be selling their products helps them grow their businesses but it’s also very meaningful for them to get to sell their food to schools and early-cares in their own town, community or region so it’s really a win, win, win.”
Seybold says there’s more funding available this year…
“We have approximately $1.35 million this year which is an increase from last year where we just had a million dollars so more funds that we are able to be rewarding to K-12 schools and early-care providers around our state to help them buy more Minnesota grown and raised food.”
Seybold says the extra money came in the budget passed by the state legislature. Applications for the food are due by October 23.
