CenterPoint Energy Offers Safety Tips During Cold Snap

Keep safety in mind when trying to keep your home warm during this January cold snap.

CenterPoint Energy Spokesperson Joshua Solis says it’s very important to be very careful with space heaters…

If you’re going to use a space heater, make sure that you keep it away from furniture, pets, children, and then it has an automatic shut off. You don’t want to open your oven and run it and use that for space heating. That can create a potentially dangerous situation.”

Solis says if you smell natural gas, act fast…

If you smell the odor of natural gas, which has a rotten egg or sulfur like odor, leave your location immediately. Don’t do anything as you’re leaving, including using the phone or anything that could cause a spark. And once you’re safely away, call local emergency responders and CenterPoint Energy.”

Solis reminds everyone that your oven should never be used as a heat source.
