Wright County has its first official candidate for Sheriff for the 2026 elections.

About a week after Wright County Sheriff Sean Deringer announced that he would not seek another term, current Chief Deputy with the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Matt Treichler has announced that he is a candidate for the office of sheriff.

In a statement, Treichler outlined his 25-plus years of service with the department, that began in 2001 as a patrol deputy.

Treichler says his current role as Chief Deputy involves overseeing the daily operation of the 3rd largest Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota, serving a population of some 155 thousand people.

Treichler pointed to his experience in various capacities including Operations, Special Investigations, Officer Field Training, Major Crimes Investigations, Use of Force Instruction, and Emergency Response. Treichler also highlighted that he is a board member of MEADA, the Mentorship Education and Drug Awareness Coalition of Wright County.

Treichler and his wife, Christine, live in the Annandale area, where they raised two children.

Without formally endorsing Treichler, Sheriff Sean Deringer noted in his recent announcement of non-candidacy that he has encouraged his chief deputy to seek the office.

Other potential candidates for sheriff have some time to think about their options. The official filing window for Wright County Sheriff will open May 19th, and will run through June 2nd.

An August primary election would need to be held if more than two candidates file for the office, with the top two vote-getters to advance to the general election. If there are only two or fewer candidates who file, the race will go directly to the general election voters in November.
