City of Buffalo Encourages Residents to “Adopt-a-Catch Basin”

The City of Buffalo has a new program that encourages residents to help to keep lakes, rivers, wetlands and ponds cleaner by helping to keep catch basins clean.

Officials say city catch basins collect storm water from streets and neighborhoods. The run-off flows directly to bodies of water in our region. That means that any trash, debris or pollutants that get through the catch basin can get into our waterways.

To help protect water quality and keep the community cleaner, the city is inviting residents and businesses to “Adopt-a-Catch Basin” and commit to keeping it clear of litter and debris. Right now one of the most common items to enter a catch basin is fall leaves.

Residents can simply use a pair of gloves, broom, rake, shovel and a dustpan and collect debris that can be put into your trash can. Officials recommend a twice a month, or as-needed cleaning.
