The recent stretch of mild weather has already prompted a pretty steady exodus of fish houses from area lakes, and now the calendar is also giving sportspersons a nudge to remove those ice houses.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding those with fish houses on lakes in the southern two-thirds of Minnesota that the deadline to remove fish houses is Monday, March 3rd. Due to the quick melting of snow that was on many lake surfaces, several inches of water can be surrounding shelters, and officials say that any quick cool-downs could result in fish houses becoming frozen-in, making it much more difficult for them to be removed.
The DNR says while temporary structures may be taken on and off the ice, structures that remain on lakes overnight after the deadline can be confiscated and the owners can face fines.
