More than 6,000 drivers in Minnesota were cited for breaking the law by utilizing their cell phones while driving during the month of April.
Minnesota Department of Public Safety Director Mike Hanson says the citations were issued during the April distracted driving enforcement campaign.
He says the step backwards is frustrating because the big jump in tickets handed out came in spite of numerous reminders to the public…
“We get out in front of it and we publicize it. We tell everybody what we’re going to do, why it’s important and how we’re going to be doing this. Then we go ahead and we conduct the campaign. And so that’s enforcement. But that’s also education and outreach efforts to go along with that enforcement effort.”
The 6,450 citations issued is 1,000 more than were handed out during last year’s campaign.
