Utilities across the state continue to offer tips on saving money by saving energy during this prolonged January cold snap.
CenterPoint Energy Spokesperson Joshua Solis…
“Temporarily lower their thermostat setting if their health permits to help reduce energy use and save money. Lowering the thermostat by 7 to 10° at night or when someone’s away from the home for at least 8 hours can potentially save 10% on heating costs.”
Solis says in addition to lowering the thermostat, Minnesotans should try to ensure that their home is buttoned-up against the bitter cold temps…
“One of the biggest culprits of reducing the temperature inside your home are air leaks or lack of proper insulation, so check around your doors, your windows, your other openings such as pipes or ducts to prevent heat loss.”
Other great ways to battle the cold is to use your window coverings and blinds effectively. On sunny days, keep the drapes or curtains open to let some warmth radiate throughout the home. When it’s cloudy, or when the sun goes down for the night, close window coverings to retain some of that natural heat.
