Many health organizations are joining the American Cancer Society today during the 2025 “Great American Smokeout.”
Today, the third Thursday of November, is set aside yearly by the American Cancer Society as the day to encourage all smokers to try to kick the habit, even if it’s just for a day.
The annual event has its origins here in Wright County. In the early 70’s, Lynn Smith, editor of the Monticello Times, encouraged the community to give up cigarettes for a day.
Smith promised to publish the names of 300 people who pledged to quit smoking for one day on the front page of the paper.
The idea caught on first regionally, then nationally and even internationally.
