The University of Minnesota is highlighting the health challenges facing rural communities that create greater mortality than urban areas.
Carrie Henning, Co-director of the U-M-N Rural Health Program, says in general, rural areas have access to fewer providers and longer distances to travel.
She says while there aren’t immediate fixes, communities can do their part together…
“Social infrastructure, are there safe places, welcoming places to gather?…Is the community welcoming to people coming in?…Focusing on innovative transportation models and focusing on the entire community.”
Henning says rural resilience often looks like resourcefulness, creativity, and community spirit.
