Holiday Food Shopping Shows Signs of Dropping as Inflation Rises

Grocery customers continue to show that they’re keeping a tight grip on their wallets even at everyday prices. The result is that a lot of big businesses have to think outside the box this holiday season.

St. Olaf Professor of Economics Allison Luedtke says stores like Walmart and Aldi have created bargain Thanksgiving baskets to give a family everything they need for about 40 dollars…

They’re doing that because they’re seeing consumers say, ‘You know, I’m not going to buy a whole turkey this year. I’m not going to buy a ham this year; it doesn’t make any sense, given my budget. Everything on my groceries is so much more expensive, I need eggs more than I need a whole turkey.”

Luedtke says current economic insecurity will also shift shoppers to in-store deals for holiday gifts, likely taking advantage of Black Friday bargains.
