With cold weather in the first week of December, many lakes across the state and here in Wright County have become frozen, but as usual, the ice consistency varies greatly.
Lisa Dugan with the Minnesota DNR says if you’re going to venture out, keep in mind no ice is 100-percent safe…
“Be prepared if you are going to be going out on the ice; check for yourself, make sure you take some safety precautions, bring ice picks with you, and wear buoyant gear if you’re walking out or snowmobiling on the ice to give yourself the best chance for getting home safe.”
Dugan says there should be at least four inches of new, clear ice if you’re walking on, at least five to seven inches of ice for an ATV or snowmobile, and for vehicles, there should be 12 inches or more of ice.
