Minnesota Could Get More Energy Assistance Funds from Congress

Temperatures are expected to fall back into more January-like levels in the next week, and the colder weather has many people thinking about their heating bills.

The Minnesota Energy Assistance Program still has plenty of funding available to help people struggling to pay their heating or utility bills. Commerce Department spokesman Michael Schmitz says they received 112 million dollars last month…

“That typically would represent about 90 percent of the funds that we’ll get for the year. We do have to wait for Congress to approve a final budget for the year before we know if we’re going to get any more funds. So we’re hoping for more but probably won’t know until March or April.”

Schmitz says 40 million dollars in grants have been provided to about 68-thousand households so far this season. There’s more information and applications on the Department of Commerce website.

Locally, you may also reach out to Wright County Community Action in Maple Lake, which implements the Energy Assistance Program in our area. Anyone with questions or concerns may call (320) 963-6500.
