A group representing the Minnesota Farm Bureau is in Washington, D-C this week for discussions with lawmakers on a number of farm topics.
Minnesota Farm Bureau President and Wright County farmer Dan Glessing is leading the Minnesota delegation, and says the state is well represented…
“We have 15 from Minnesota out here visiting with their lawmakers, telling their stories from their farms and ranches, which is what makes it all worth while. All the work that policy is, is worth it when you hear those stories on how those pieces of legislation are affecting them on their farms and ranches, or the lack of legislation. So, we’re excited to have that many here visiting with our lawmakers and being part of the process.”
Glessing says it probably comes as no surprise that the Farm Bill and associated issues are among the primary topics for discussion with federal lawmakers…
“Obviously we saw it come out of committee, and just making sure that they know the importance of those titles that weren’t pushed through in July and weren’t approved. Including rural development and conservation and there’s a lot of good programs that are yet to be determined and so just making sure they know the importance of what is in that Farm Bill that needs to be, and how it works within our farms and ranches in rural communities. Year-round E15 would be another huge win. From a domestic use side of things, and we’re looking at profitability on the farms…that’s another topic that we’re talking about. For the overall farm economy, year-round E15 would be one of those that would be pretty quick, and a fast turnaround, and we’d really like to see that get done. Trade is another one. Obviously we’ve seen a lot of trade announcements, but we really need to see pen to paper deals with our products on ships heading to foreign countries, and to really see those trade deals come alive.”
