Minnesota’s political landscape is undergoing a significant shift ahead of the 2026 elections, with at least 10 state legislators announcing their retirements and another 11 pursuing higher office.
Hamline University Professor David Schultz suggests that the politically motivated shootings targeting lawmakers in June may have influenced a number of these decisions…
“It took a polarized environment, which I think many legislators found already distasteful, and it’s really added to the polarization. With I guess the fear factor at this point, and I think people are now starting to ask, is it really worth being in the legislature? Is it really worth being in public service where I could very well be a target?”
The wave of retirements and ambitious bids could reshape the balance of power in both chambers, setting up a fierce fight for legislative control in 2026.
