The Minnesota Senate passed a reform bill this week that would offer homeowners new protections in dealing with HOA’s and Common Interest Communities.
Republican Senator Eric Lucero of St. Michael says the bill protects against conflicts of interest within the Home Owners Association, and limits fines and incidents leading to foreclosure….
“This is a pro consumer protection bill. It is end to end common sense reforms, it balances the scales between residents, boards and property management companies.”
But DFL Senator Ron Latz argued the bill has language that is confusing and could lead to lawsuits…
“I respect the need to do something here. And I respect the amount of time it takes to work on a topic that’s this big. This bill is rife with difficulties like that. It is simply not ready.”
The bill passed 44 to 22. It now heads to the House where every bill will need at least some level of bi-partisan support because of the equal number of Republican and Democratic representatives.
