During the upcoming three-day weekend, any Minnesota resident can go fishing for free if they are fishing with a youngster age 15 or younger.

Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend” is January 17th through the 19th. The Minnesota DNR says it’s a great opportunity to introduce a young person to the fun of fishing, and the great outdoors in general. Officials remind residents to observe ice thickness guidelines, and be cautious of ice conditions wherever they decide to fish.

People can also consider fishing at a state park or recreation area, where they can combine fishing with other outdoor fun. The DNR is waiving vehicle permit fees at all 73 state parks and recreation areas on January 19th during the first Free Park Day of 2026.
