MN Blackout License Plates Proving Very Popular

A year ago when the Minnesota Department of Safety’s Driver and Vehicle Services Division announced that Minnesota would be offering blackout license plates, it was expected that sales would be strong.

Minnesota DVS projected that as many as 160,000 drivers would opt for the white letters and numbers on the all-black license plate design. A year later, it turns out those projections were modest.

In its first year of availability, Minnesotans bought more than 256 thousand blackout plates. As with any specialty plate – like those that include a Minnesota sports team logo or a college logo among the many available – there is a $30 annual fee that is paid when the plates are purchased and in subsequent years when buying tabs.

Minnesota offers more than 120 specialty license plates.
