MN Farm Bureau Among Groups in Washington to Discuss Agriculture Legislation

(MN Farm Bureau President Dan Glessing)

Minnesota farm groups were in Washington, D-C this week, having discussions with lawmakers on agricultural issues.

Minnesota Farm Bureau President Dan Glessing says a new, complete Farm Bill remains a top priority…

We had the financial pieces taken care of in reconciliation, but there’s a whole lot of policy items whether that be a solution to interstate commerce, Prop 12, or rural development things like that. Another issue would be year round E15. We really think that now’s the time. Really it’s a clean air choice for the consumer. It’s a more cost-effective choice for the consumer, and it would just be a good use of our corn into that product. So, we’re encouraging them to really consider moving that forward too.”

Meanwhile, Minnesota 1st District Congressman Brad Finstad, who is a former MFB Area Director, agrees on the need for an ammended Farm Bill, particularly one that would include some more lenience for Midwestern states on the California Proposition 12 issue…

Making sure that we don’t let states like California dictate the gestation pens in our farms in Iowa and Minnesota. But we also have some things around modernizing FSA loan limits, making sure that they’re keeping up with the higher inputs and the higher land costs.”

Finstad says a new farm bill should also modernize the Conservation Reserve Program to create a more even playing field for young farmers to gain access to land.
