Last year the Monticello girls’ gymnastics team narrowly lost to Detroit Lakes and finished 2nd at the state tournament in Class A. Then Monticello found out it was moving up to AA in gymnastics for this season, and their frustration was twofold. First, they had to move up a class and as Coach Lisa Moran said, “Detroit Lakes is such good competition, we just wanted the chance to beat them so bad.” Well things worked out just fine for Monticello! This season the Magic climbed up the rankings all the way to #1 going into the state meet at Roy Wilkins Auditorium last weekend, and won it all with a score of 143.6, getting past defending champ, Owatonna who finished with a score of 144.5. It is Monticello’s first state championship in Gymnastics. Detroit Lakes won the Class A title.

Lauren Hanson nailed the vault on the last rotation to clinch the state championship. Hanson said the team was motivated all summer to prove they could compete at the AA level. Not only did Hanson help the Magic win the state championship, for the second straight year, she won the All-Around title, the third straight year a Wright County Athlete won the All-Around. Hanson did it the past two years, and the year before that Jackie Bergeron from STMA won it. Hanson totaled a score of 38.65 and also won golad on the uneven bars with a score of 9.62. Hanson said “It was definitely emotional, all my hard work paid off in the moment. It was overwhelming.”
