There are more scam scenarios being reported in our region, and several have again attempted to make the person receiving a phone call believe they’re being contacted by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have received several reports of residents being contacted by individuals impersonating Sheriff’s Office deputies, and in some cases, the scam phone number may appear to be the Sheriff’s Department’s main number of (763) 682-1162.
Scammers typically claim that the person receiving the call missed a court appearance or failed to report for jury duty, and they frequently demand bail or money to settle fines via phone, wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
Officials say if you receive a call like this, do not share any personal information, and don’t call back the number provided in the message or voicemail.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office says these calls are scams. The department does not collect bail or fines over the phone, and would never accept payment in the form of bitcoin, gift cards, or wire transfers.
If you have any doubts about a call you’ve received, contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using a verified phone number.
The Sheriff’s Office recommends that citizens stay alert and help spread the word to protect others in our community.
