Multiple Vehicle Crashes Involving Area Residents Through Labor Day Weekend

The State Patrol responded to several traffic crashes involving residents of our area through the Labor Day holiday period.

Authorities say Saturday just before 12 noon, a Honda SUV and a Toyota passenger car collided on Highway 169 at the intersection with Highway 27 in Mille Lacs County. State Troopers reported that the Honda CR-V was northbound, while the Toyota Camry was southbound and was taking a right turn onto Highway 27 when the crash happened.

The driver of the Toyota, 81-year-old Mary McMullen of St. Cloud was transported to Mille Lacs Health in Onamia with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Honda SUV, 47-year-old Janelle Mattson, and a passenger, 47-year-old Danielle Johnson, both of Otsego, had non-life threatening injuries that did not require hospital treatment. The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office and Mille Lacs Ambulance assisted at the scene.

One person was injured when two passenger vehicles collided early Saturday afternoon north of Buffalo.The State Patrol was called to the crash scene on Highway 25 at 50th Street Northeast in Buffalo Township around 2 PM. Officials say a Chevrolet Impala and a Nissan Ultima were both southbound on Highway 25 at the time of the crash.

Officials say the driver of the Chevrolet Impala, 44-year-old Siane Borkay of Big Lake sustained non-life threatening injuries and was treated at Buffalo Hospital. The driver of the Nissan sedan, 34-year-old Kristana Rascoe of Elk River, was not injured. Two juvenile passengers, a male and a female, both of Big Lake, also escaped injury. The Buffalo Fire Department, Wright County Sheriff’s Office and Allina Ambulance assisted State Troopers.

Late Sunday afternoon, area residents were involved in a two-vehicle crash in Cass County. The State Patrol reports that around 5:40 PM, a Kia Forte passenger car was rear-ended by a Chevy pickup on southbound Highway 64 at 56th Street Southwest in Poplar Township.

The pickup was driven by a 16-year-old male who was not identified. He was not injured in the crash. Two passengers in the pickup, identified as a 16-year-old male from Echo Bay, Ontario, and a 15-year-old male from Waverly, both also escaped injury. The driver of the Kia passenger car, 18-year-old Kylee Bowman of Isanti, and a passenger, 22-year-old Afton Guyer of Otsego, both had non-life threatening injuries and were treated at the Lakewood Medical Center in Staples. The Staples Ambulance and EMTs assisted at the scene.

Early Sunday evening, a motorcyclist was injured in a crash in neighboring Sherburne County. According to the State Patrol, 39-year-old Zachary Morical of Elk River was southbound on Highway 169 when he lost control of his Suzuki Sport motorcycle, and ran off the road into the east ditch. Officials say Morical sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids for treatment. Authorities say the driver was wearing a helmet. The Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office and North Ambulance responded to the crash along with the State Patrol.


Late Monday morning, a metro area man was injured in a motorcycle crash, also in Sherburne County.

The State Patrol reports that shortly after 11 AM, a Yamaha sports bike was westbound on Highway 10 at Milepost 201 in Big Lake Township when the vehicle crashed.

The driver, 63-year-old Chao Kong of Blaine, had non-life threatening injuries and was treated at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. Officials say the man was wearing a helmet.

The Big Lake Police and Fire Departments and the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
