“National Night Out,” “Night to Unite” Tonight (Tuesday)

Tonight (Tuesday) is the annual “National Night Out,” or “Night to Unite,” throughout Wright County, and across the country.

No matter the name, tonight is the night where neighborhoods are encouraged to gather together to strengthen neighborhood bonds, in order to watch out for one another in neighborhood safety and policing programs.

The U-S Department of Justice developed the program in 1984 as a way to build a partnership between communities and law enforcement – putting names and faces to the officers who police the streets and the communities they serve. The DOJ estimates that some 40 million people and 15,000 law enforcement agencies take part in the “National Night Out” nationally each year.

Among the events in our area, the City of Buffalo and the Buffalo Police Department will visit a number of block parties and other gatherings throughout the evening. Also tonight (Tuesday) in Buffalo, a community gathering is planned at the new Buffalo Area Community Center in the former PenRad building off North Highway 25. From 5 to 8 PM, visitors can take guided tours of the new facility, and youngsters will enjoy a bounce house. Pizza will be available for purchase. Visitors can also drop off items for the Community Garage Sale fundraiser for the BACC Improvement Projet. in Monticello, a community cookout with a petting zoo is planned at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Most all communities and some townships in our area will mark “National Night Out.” Check with your local community for details on the many events that are scheduled.
