Forward Independence Party candidate Mike Newcome has launched a campaign for governor in Minnesota. Saying residents of the state no longer have a government that is “for the people and by the people,” the Lake Elmo businessman was introduced Thursday at the State Capitol, saying he’ll give voters a “viable” alternative…

“It is now by the party and their special interests and for the party and their special interests. And neither the Democrats nor the Republicans because of their toxic partisan battle are able to accomplish anything in this state on behalf of the people.”

Newcome says he wants to stay away from being categorized…

“Oh you sound like a Republican based on your tax stances. And I say well a common sense government that doesn’t waste money and rolls out the red carpet for businesses. I don’t think that’s a Republican stance , I think that’s a Minnesotan stance. So, I call myself right down the middle.”

Newcome says he’d like to become governor and partner with the Republicans and Democrats to get things accomplished for the people. His father was a state lawmaker in the late 1960s and 70s who caucused with conservatives.

In addition to Newcome’s third-party campaign, there are also currently at least eight Republicans running against Governor Tim Walz.
