Record Holiday Travel – Noticeably Lower Gas Prices

AAA projects that a record number of Americans will travel over the 2025 Christmas – New Year’s holiday period.

Estimates are that 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home over the 13-day year-end holiday period from December 20th through January 1st. This year’s forecast is a 2.2 percent increase over 2024, surpassing last year’s record of 119.7 million travelers.

AAA says most of those traveling will be in their car, but a new record of more than 8 million travelers are expected to travel by air to their destination.

For those who are driving through the holidays, there has been some noticeable relief at the gas pump over last year.

AAA’s latest fuel price estimates show that Minnesota’s statewide average for a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded is $2.66, down from $2.87 a year ago.

The average price in the Twin Cities metro area is $2.76 per gallon, down from $2.93 per gallon in 2024. Here in Wright County, prices are lower still, with the average price at the pump at $2.61 per gallon.

AAA shows the national gas price average at $2.85 per gallon.
