Late last week, President Donald Trump said he’s received a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing willingness to come to the negotiating table over the Russia-Ukraine war. The correspondence coming after a heated meeting in the Oval Office a week earlier.
6th District Congressman Tom Emmer says he believes the president is pushing the two sides in ways that no one else has been willing to do…
“What he (Trump) wants to see is… let’s stop the bloodshed. If there’s a way to do it he clearly is the only one that has tried. He’s the only one, apparently, who can do it, to get these two countries to sit down at the table.”
Emmer says pressure from the White House is getting response from some European leaders as well…
“Western Europe has been sitting on their rear end. He’s(Trump) trying to get them into the game, and it looks like it’s working because it’s their backyard, and they should not expect that every time something goes wrong, the United States of America will bail everybody out. They need to take care of their own business, too.”
The Ukrainian president reportedly described the White House showdown as “regrettable” in a lengthy social media post after the U-S announced a pause in military aid to Kyiv.
