Rural Minnesota Communities Seek Increase in State Aid

Many local governments are raising property taxes next year to help pay for city services and projects. Bradley Peterson of the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities says they’re pushing for an increase in Local Government Aid, or, LGA…

“The appropriation for the program is currently at 644 million dollars a year. The last time that was increased was in 2023 when there was the big surplus. And at that time they put in an additional 80 million dollars.”

Peterson describes one of the coalition’s current proposals…

“Is actually indexing that appropriation number to inflation. So that as inflation goes, so would local government aid. And we used to that actually. We did that in the late ’90s, early 2000s.”

Peterson says LGA helps cities meet their needs without significantly increasing property taxes.
