Spring Load Weight Limits to Begin Tuesday, March 3rd

Spring load weight limitations will go into effect on roads in the metro zone including Wright County as of 12:01 AM Tuesday, March 3rd.

MnDOT made the announcement in recent days to give those who have heavy vehicle moving an opportunity to do so before the restrictions are put in place.

The purpose of the restrictions is to protect the bituminous road surfaces from damage and deterioration when they are at their most vulnerable – as frost comes out of the ground and the gravel underneath the bituminous has a high moisture content. Spring road weight limits are typically in place for six to eight weeks.

This year’s spring load limit restrictions are beginning on the same date as in 2025. In 2024, road weight limits were even earlier, beginning on February 26th. The uneven winter weather that has featured extended periods of very warm weather in February has prompted the early spring load limit placement.

With the extended stretch of unusually warm temperatures in recent days, spring weight load restrictions are likely to be put into place early again this year.

Typically, these restrictions don’t take effect until the middle of March, but the last two winters have seen the restrictions placed earlier than normal, starting on February 26th in 2024 and March 3rd in 2025.
