State Officials Urge Safety for Spring Motorcycle Season

Motorcycles are back on Minnesota roads in large numbers. State motorcycle safety coordinator Jay Bock says it’s important for motorcyclists to sharpen up their skills as they return to riding in the spring…

“Well, I really encourage riders to take a training course. Always re-familiarize yourself with your motorcycle. Go to some parking lots, getting that braking down again, check out those corners. Making sure your bike is in good shape. Have that routine maintenance setting it up again from the winter.”

Bock says it’s disappointing that fatalities on Minnesota roads rose from 69 in 2023 to 74 last year. He says the contributing factors in deadly crashes are familiar…

“Unfortunately, the fatalities that you’re referring to have been the same cause and effect that we’ve had for years. It’s been distracted driving plays a part of course. That’s on the side of the motorcyclist and the motorists, then we have impaired driving, and the big one is speed.”

Bock says drivers of standard cars and trucks need to remember that motorcycles will now be common on Minnesota roads. He says drivers need to share the roadway with motorcycles and double check their blind spots.
