Winter Hazard Awareness Week (Part 3)

This is Winter Hazard Awareness Week in Minnesota. Today’s (Wednesday) topic is Winter Fire Safety.

Officials say nearly 3/4ths of all fire deaths occur in the home.

Minnesotans are reminded to be particularly careful in the kitchen. Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires, followed by heating fires frequently attributed to fireplaces or chimneys.

When using a portable heating appliance, keep at least 3 feet of clearance between anything combustible and the heater, and be sure to turn the unit off before going to bed for the night.

Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed on every level of your home, including the basement, and check them monthly.

Thursday’s winter hazard topic will be indoor air issues.
